Moths
Hackfall has an interesting population of moths. Thanks to Charles Fletcher for the species list below and use of his copyright photograph.
The picture above is of Micropterix aureatella which has a wingspan of just 9-11 mm. The adults have working mandibles, and they feed on pollen from various flowers particularly from the flowers of sedge which occurs in abundance in Hackfall, particularly the Weeping Sedge (Carex pendula). It is thought that their caterpillars feed on Bilberry. Bilberry occurs in areas of the wood, in particular the upper slopes to the South of Mowbray Castle.
